Pre-School Special Education

This page outlines a simplified version of the steps taken from requesting an assessment o implementation of services for the San Francisco Unified School District.

I think my child may be eligible for pre-school special education services. What do I do?

Step 1
In writing, request an assessment of your child. State your concerns.

Step 2
School district sends you an assessment plan within 15 calendar days of receipt of your letter.

Step 3
You must sign and return the assessment plan in order for the assessment to proceed. There can be no assessment without the written permission of the family.

Step 4
Within 50 days after written permission by parent is received, the assessment is completed, a report written, and an Individual Education Program (IEP) meeting is held. The IEP describes the child's strengths and needs, and specifies special education services to be provided.

Step 5
The IEP is signed by parent and services are implemented immediately after the IEP is signed. The IEP must have an implementation date.

Step 6
The IEP is reviewed at least once a year. Every three years, the child is re-evaluated. Parents can request an IEP meeting or review in writing at any time. The District must convene a meeting within 30 days of a written parent request.
