Early Start

This page outlines a simplified version of the steps taken from identifying eligibility to implementation of services for The Golden Gate Regional Center and the San Francisco Unified School District.

I think my child may be eligible for Early Start services. What do I do?

(Whether the child receives services through GGRC or SFUSD, the process is the same. For information about eligibility, check the Eligibility page of this website.)

Step 1
Ask to speak to the Early Start Supervisor/Intake Coordinator.

Step 2
Early Start Service Coordinator is assigned.

Step 3
The Early Start Service Coordinator will set up a time for a meeting with the family.

Step 4
A Multi-Disciplinary Team meets for assessment and evaluation.

Step 5
Within 45 days, an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) meeting is held and necessary services are identified.

Step 6
Implementation of services begins.

Step 7
Services are reviewed every six months, at the time of the birth month and 6 months later.

Step 8
Between 2 years, 6 months and 2 years, 9 months, an IFSP meeting is held to develop transition steps/plans.

Step 9
At three years, the child is reviewed for continuing eligiblity.

Step 10
The child transitions from early intervention to special education pre-school, ongoing Regional Center services and/or other community programs.
